Windows 8.1 is a operating system made by Microsoft, which is actually an upgrade for Windows 8. Windows 8.1 was primarily intended to address complaints from Windows 8 users and reviewers upon release. Visible enhancements include an improved Start screen, additional previews, additional apps included, stricter OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) integration, Internet Explorer 11, a unified Bing-powered search system, restoration of a visible Start button on the taskbar, and and the ability to restore behavior prior to opening the user’s login desktop instead of the home screen. Windows 8.1Italso added support for such emerging technologies as high-resolution screens, 3D printing, Wi-Fi Direct, and Miracast streaming.

Additional requirements to use certain features:

  • To use the touch features you need a tablet or monitor that supports multiple taps
  • To access the Windows Store and download, run and align applications, you need an active internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768
  • Microsoft account required for some features
  • Internet access (there may be fees for ISPs)
  • Secure boot requires firmware that supports UEFI v2.3.1 Errata B and has the Microsoft Windows Certification Authority in the UEFI signature database
  • Some games and programs may require a DirectX 10 or higher compatible graphics card for optimal performance

  • BitLocker To Go requires a USB flash drive (Windows 8.1 Pro only)
  • BitLocker requires either Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2 or a USB flash drive (Windows 8.1 Pro only)
  • Hyper-V client requires a 64-bit system with SLAT capabilities and 2 GB of additional RAM (Windows 8.1 Pro only)
  • A TV tuner is required to play and record live TV shows in Windows Media Center (Windows 8.1 Pro Pack and Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack only)
  • Miracast requires a screen adapter that supports Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.3 and a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi Direct
  • Wi-Fi Direct Printing requires a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi Direct and a device that supports Wi-Fi Direct Printing
  • Free TV content on the Internet varies by geographic location, and some content types may require additional fees (Windows 8.1 Pro Pack and Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack only)
  • To install a 64-bit operating system on a 64-bit PC, your processor must accept CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW and LAHF / SAHF
  • InstantGo only works with computers designed for Connected Standby.
